Entry #5: Narrowing Down Projects. The One Question that Helps.

I am huddled away writing, in the wee early hours of the morning because, as happens sometimes, I cannot sleep.

I need a sounding board. And, everyone is asleep.

Even if they were awake, there are very few people who can happily listen to the many thoughts and ideas writers have, as often as they’d like, especially late at night, or early in the morning.

With so many projects competing for attention, I need to constantly sift and sort for what to focus on.

Sometimes I do this by getting feedback. And that helps. But only if I already know what excites me, and what I’m going for.

Sometimes I do this by starting with the project that is most developed. After all, if all the projects excite me equally, it makes sense to focus on the project that is closest to done.

In reality, though, sometimes the idea that’s most fully formed just isn’t the one.

The question that quickly narrows down the field of projects, for me, more than any other, is to ask myself, Which project, am I most willing to spend the next few years on, if that’s what it takes to get it done?

It doesn’t mean it will take that long.

But I know the project that gives me that kind of energy is the one I need to focus on.
