I was in denial about being a writer.
I had ideas.
And worlds I wanted to get lost in.
But I was sure that writing was a career for people who didn’t just have ideas.
They had stories. Fully formed, beginning to end, stories.
This may be because teachers make writing sound really linear.
You get an idea. You sit down. You focus. You write from beginning to end. You rewrite. And rewrite. And rewrite. The end.
It would have been life-changing to hear a teacher say, every story is completely different. Some stories come out more finished than others. But stories usually need to be developed. That process can feel like organized chaos. And the only stories that will ever make it to readers, are the ones you hang in with, and see through to the end.
