Entry #11: Make or Destroy

Pain needs an exit.

A release valve.

Just like desire.

And any other primal human experience.

It needs to be acknowledged, and then it needs a healthy life-giving way out.

Or else.

And we’ve been experiencing a lot of or else.

Eating disorders, suicides, mass shootings, online bullying, opioid addiction, organized xenophobia, and on and on and on.

I can’t stop thinking about how displaced people are, how uncertain people are. And how it’s not going to get any better unless we start putting more emphasis on making things, in groups, in a way that means something.

I wonder what would happen if we started asking, “What do you make?” or “What would you like to make?” instead of “What do you do?”

The answer might not be something as straight forward as “stories” or “spaceships.” Or it might.

Because, as we get more isolated, with nothing meaningful to make, and nothing compassionate, or truthful, or life-affirming to channel energy into, pain will take the only other route it can take.

Destroy.
